Virtual Web Museum

Tagline
Wherever you go (or not go), learning will follow
Description

VR-Based museum following the timeline of the web (History of the Web) from its beginnings at CERN to the modern-day. This experience was made to be accessed by anyone, whether it be with a simple Google cardboard and a phone or using their desktop computer.

The full experience can be viewed here:

Technologies used

HTML, JavaScript, Aframe, SketchUp, iMovie, Zoom.

Obstacles

Finding accurate/ working 3D models and learning the Aframe framework from scratch. Sometimes JavaScript would crash unexpectedly and we would lose a significant chunk of work.

Accomplishments

Learning to use new technologies to create a virtual space that anyone can enjoy and expanding our network by working with people through this online resource.

Learnings

Gained experience in how to problem-solve when learning to use new tools and frameworks in the form of Aframe and HTML, interacting and communicating effectively and efficiently.

Next steps

We hope to add more interaction to the web-based museum that we created encompassing similar activities that would be available to guests visiting its real-world equivalents. Also, we hope to expand the virtual museum idea from web history to other topics such as natural history and anthropology, slowly evolving the tech to be able to re-create real museums in virtual reality. We would enable this by incorporating deep machine learning algorithms to recognize objects from photos published by visitors, tour guides, and Google Maps Street View to create 3D models for unparalleled VR experience.
